I’m getting a 2022 Ford Maverick base model. Is this purchase going to be a mistake?

Ok thanks for the advice.👌🏼

From the perspective of someone that owns multiple modern products built by Ford and is happy with them.

Yes - you are probably making a mistake.

but what I’m super concerned about is the eCVT transmission, if you know anything about Ford and CVTs - you know it’s been bad.

Their ZF built CVTs on the Focus, C-Max, Taurus, 500 and Freestyle were absolute total garbage.

their later CVTs were even worse - the CVT gearbox in the Ford Fusion hybrid was absolutely horrendous. You just had to constantly replace them one after the other

Given how poorly the PowerShift transmission was integrated and how much trouble it has caused to Ford owners

and what’s currently still going on with the 8 speed overheating and the absolutely terrible manual transmission on mustangs (you can find a lot of examples of that on the forums, the ones I took are from ones I recently answered)

Something tells me their new eCVT transmission is not going to differ. there’s no reason to assume otherwise. IMO it’s probably going to be a pile of garbage.

With Ford, you always gotta wait. They almost always mess up the first couple of years. Just to wait and see if the car they made is decent or total junk.

If I’d just have to have a Maverick I’d consider the 2.0 EcoBoost - what we already know is that that engine has oil consumption issues and the 8 speed has a tendency to overheat, but from what I’ve been seeing it’s bad but not terrible.

also, the new 2.5L engine is concerning. They named it “DuraTec” but I doubt it has anything to do with the regular and very reliable 2.5L DuraTech. it’s just too new to really know anything.

It’s a new design, with a brand new powertrain, in its first year of production, oh and it’s a Ford - “what could go wrong?”

I just looked it up and there are a few things about it that would make me walk away.

First, it is a uni body vehicle. there is no frame like the Ranger.

Second, it is front wheel drive with a CVT transmission.

Third, it is a hybrid.

And last but not lease,

It is made in HERMILLSO MEXICO!

Just my two cents.

Do think the warranty would cover me if I have any major issue?

Knowing modern cars, usually they begin to have major issues just as the warranty ends.
Especially the hybrid batteries - those can fail after 5-10 years and cost thousands to replace.

Yes.

Please search the forum first. This has been covered.

is that the pick up with no frame?

It’s has a unibody frame.

it's either unibody, or body on frame

Yes cuz it's a brand new model, that too I am guessing it's the hybrid model which adds more things to break.

Yes, practically nothing Ford makes in Mexico has any quality whatsoever. The Mach-E "Mustang"  had a recall issued yesterday I believe for poor windshield adhesion. Take a guess where they're made. The Bronco "Sport" is also made there and they're being recalled for stuff as well. If they can't glue a windshield into a car properly, why anybody would trust that they can assemble wheel bearings or final drive gears for an electric car correctly is beyond me. I'm a Ford guy, but these new Ford products are shameful.

If you want a small Ford truck, I might suggest you get a late model of the old Ranger. The last generation was made from 1998 to 2012 and they were pretty well sorted out by the end of the run. I'm not sure why they nuked the design, to be honest. They're easy to work on and are pretty well proven. They were pretty much all made in the USA, and you can do actual truck stuff with it. My DD's a 22 year old Ranger. They don't get great gas mileage, but it's a truck, they aren't supposed to. You'd also have a standard 6 foot bed, not a 4 foot.

Don't think it's a mistake but I won't ever buy a first year model ever again. There's too many issues that show up that will be fixed in a year or 2. I would wait until year 3, year 2 minimum.
