Hi and thank you for taking my question.
2017 Hyundai Sonata, base model, oil light issue. Car is regularly serviced, oil changed every 5 months, 40,000 miles, last oil change in August. Light started flicking on at random times. Brought to main mechanic, said oil was a little low, but no leaks of any kind. Stated that Hyundais are known for burning oil. No charge, gave me the key and said to bring it back after 500 miles to see if the car is burning oil. On the way home, the light started flicking on/off again. Now, less than 50 miles from last service, the light is regular/persistent. No knocks, noises or issues of any kind. Any ideas, please?
What’s the oil level?
If the oil level is above the low mark, and you don’t hear any clanging/knocking noises from the engine, it’s probably just a bad sensor.
Check the oil pressure as well.
If you change the oil every 40,000 miles then I'm not a bit surprised that the engine is worn out and burning oil. Cut that interval down by factor of at least 5.
Hopefully a finger slipped and he really meant every 4000 miles! If oil was really left in there 40K miles the engine is toast. Pressure should be verified with a mechanical gauge in any event.
