Is it worth it?

Scotty,

I have a 2009 Nissan Versa SL 1.8 with a CVT transmission. The car has 207,000 miles on it, so i feel lucky that it has lasted this long, but recently the transmission went out on it. It has newer tires, new exhaust, shocks, coil packs, spark plugs, etc. and all of those repairs weren't cheep.

I found a used cvt transmission for about $800.00 from JDM importers or an engine and transmission with between 45,000 and 65,000 miles and a 30 day guarantee for about $1,100.00.

A mechanic I know will install the "new" engine and transmission. Total price for the whole repair, parts and labor, will be about $2,600.00.

The question is, with the price of cars now, new and used, is it worth it to go this route to get it back on the road or do I just cut my losses?

Thanks,

What will you replace it with (and for how much), if you decide to cut your losses?

I'm not sure. If a car, probably a used Camry.

In normal times, I would say not worth it at all.  Don’t fix it

But with the way car prices are these days, it may be worth it. I’d look at my local market to see if their is a comparable reliable car I could get and compare that with fixing the car. Keeping in mind fixing the transmission is borrowed time.

I don't advise placing a used engine and transmission with 30 days warranty. If you want to do it correctly, find one from a reputable company with longer warranty. Another thing is that JDM ones might not quite fit your car, I can not say for sure but you have to search a lot to make sure they fit.

If you go ahead and do the work, you'll have a relatively reliable, functioning car.  If you don't, you'll have $2600 in your pocket and no car.  Which do you want?  I would definitely go ahead and do the work.
