Is my engine burning oil?

Scotty,

I got a used 2017 Honda Accord EX-L; it has a 2.4L i4 engine with a CVT automatic transmission, and has a little over 11.8 k miles on it. I'm afraid it could be burning oil. I checked the exhaust pipe and found the inside of it was sooty, but not oily. On cold start, there seemed to be some faint smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe, but it disappeared after a couple seconds of idling. I couldn't quite tell if the smell coming out of the exhaust was gas or oil, but it too disappeared after it was left idling for a couple seconds. I checked the oil dipstick and found that the level was halfway between full and low. The oil-life reader in the car says it's still good at 70%, and I haven't smelled anything burning while driving it down the highway. Granted I'm on an inclined driveway, and didn't let the engine get up to temp when I checked it. Is my engine ok? If it isn't, what should I do?

That means you are not burning oil, you may have rich running condition.

So, the reading is off. You should check it correctly.

No, your car is not burning oil and you are worried too much.

The white smoke on cold start up is just condensation.  Perfectly normal.
