I have a 2011 Jeep Compass I bought new in 2011. It has 120000 miles on it. In June it started shutting down while driving which would cause the engine light to come on. While the engine light was on it would never shut down but as soon as the light disappeared bam it would shut down. It would shut down within 5 minutes of starting the car whether it was driving down the road or idling. So I did some youtube research and found your channel. I saw where you changed the crankshaft position sensor and others doing the same for this problem. I searched Auto Zone and found the part was $18.99. I also saw it took less than an hour to replace on my year model jeep. I dropped the jeep off at the dealership and explained what it was doing. They called me with the repair estimate saying it was crankshaft position sensor codes that came up. Estimate of $605. I feel this is extremely high. Are they ripping me off?

It’s best you used an OEM part to avoid having the problem recur.

Skip the dealer, find yourself a trustworthy independent mechanic in your area who won’t find every excuse to overcharge you. Price around and ask family/friends for mechanic references. You can even use the forum mechanic referrals, if you live near one of them -

All the best!
Never go to a dealer for repairs unless it is under warranty or you have recalls. Find an independent mechanic to diagnose the car.

Is the Pope Catholic?
Dealership repair prices are at least 2x more than an independent shop. At least!!! I’ve seen quotes of 3x or even 4x of what it would cost an Indy.
Dealerships usually prey on unsuspecting people.
