[Closed] Is the Tesla Model Y a work of art?!

Scotty and Forum members,

Toyota recently tore down a Tesla Model Y, and called it a work of art. Work of Art!!!

From your perspective, are Tesla Model Y’s really a work of art? Why or why not?

Tesla has been making EVs since 2008 (the Roadster) and 2012 (Model S) yet their quality consistently ranks in the bottom of reliability surveys.

.

The Model Y is not a work of art, either aesthetically or mechanically.  Their quality is still poor, and let’s see how they hold up 10 years down the road.

.

Unfortunately, in my state of California the Model Y has overtaken the Toyota RAV4 in terms of sales of new cars for 2022.  So, ‘work of art’ or not, too many fools are still falling for the unproven technology.

Meh.  Not sure where you're going here.  To me it looks just like all of the hundred other egg-shaped crossovers on the market.  But no offense... to each his own.

But as this is primarily a repair and service forum, @daywalker hits it.  Tesla's are not good cars.

Art is in the eye of the beholder. Some throw a pile of offal onto a canvas and call it "art". I would put Tesla in the same category.

There are two reason why people hate Tesla and Tesla drivers. I think I should say "two reasons people discriminate against Teslas and Tesla owners."

There are generally two reasons why people like Teslas and drive them. First there are the ones who believe they are "saving the planet" or some such delusional nonsense. Second are gadget freaks who are in love with technology. The former are the ones that are the most disliked, much like the early Prius owners mocked by South Park years ago ("the Pious"). Those are the kind of Tesla owners that I have most frequently encountered and they tend to be insufferable, just like Prius owners when hybrids were the latest in virtue signalling. (The gadget freaks are OK, though I don't understand how anyone could actually want "features" like the car being so tied to the manufacturer that they can exercise control over it remotely. For that reason alone I would not want a Tesla.)

Another reason for some of us is that the only reason Tesla exists is due to government favoritism. The company would have folded a long time ago otherwise. (That's really the only reason the entire electric car industry exists at all.) Between tax credits and carbon credits, upper middle class Tesla owners have been subsidized over the years by people living in small apartments who can only afford old junkers.

I personally have no problem with anyone spending their money on a Tesla if that's what they want (a fool and his money are soon parted). I would never spend that kind of money on any car.

As far as the rest of that rant I don't even know where that's coming from and we're getting pretty far afield from whether a Model "Y" is a "work of art". In any event I personally consider the Checker Model "Y" to be much more a work of art than the Tesla.

That's nice. Except for the color.

Yeah, the color is a bit odd. Checker actually made some wild-looking cars back in the day.

You can call a Mercedes a work of art - this does not make it a thing you'd want to own.

we do not know what they meant, complexly? integration? shape? looks?

To me, the Toyota PSD (Power Split Device) is a work of art, because it's super simple mechanically, but super sophisticated in it's design.

And generally, It doesn't have to be pretty to work, it definitely doesn't have to be pretty to last.

I feel like they're overrated by the owners but very underrated by the haters

Nope! They're cheaply made and they become an endless money pit as the battery and many other things start breaking in those particular vehicles.

You want an automotive piece of art? THIS is an automotive piece of art, and it first went on sale in 1955:

eugghh. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess.

It always has been, though compare this car to anything else that was available in 1955. (I've driven these and there is nothing else like it even today.) Car Wizard certainly seems to be impressed.

The Tesla Model Y is not a work of art and never will be. It doesn't even look like a nice car to drive. I even went to a Tesla dealership and was not impressed with the model Y.

I know I am in the minority opinion on this. I concur with Toyota that the Tesla Model Y is a work of art.

And I’m not talking about the fit and finish, because that part is trash.

I’m talking about the innards of the car.

I know both Toyota and Honda (and perhaps others) by competitors cars to learn and study and innovate. And IMHO, Toyota and Honda do the best job of this study. Because they approach they keep that curiosity open, to what makes other (successful) cars tick. Toyota most notably did it with a Benz, to develop their Lexus brand. And Honda most notably did it with super cars, to build the NSX.

With Tesla specifically, the work of art: the electric motors, the battery pack, and the whole heating and cooling system for the motors, battery pack, and the passenger compartment.

The electric motor has a clever set of magnet placements which increase power and efficiency. The battery pack is pretty clever how they stack tiny cylindrical to make one massive battery (providing room for thermal expansion and cooling).

Compare this to the electric BZ4X that Toyota released. It pales in comparison technologically and how it is put together. If one opens the hood, it looks like a mess and hodgepodge. Which makes sense, because the BZ4X is built on thr eTNGA platform, which shares much with the traditional TNGA platform.

Tesla doesn’t have legacy and gas cars to deal with, so it can build an assembly line and cars that aren’t limited in scope.

And of course, their super charging system is crazy. 30 minutes from 0 to 80%. Granted, that’s still about 25 minutes too long still, but it is the best on the market at this moment.

As far as aesthetics, I’m not too fond of the looks of the Model Y, but I am keen on  the friction coefficient. It’s one of the lowest in the industry.

TBH, I was super excited for the BZ4X because it is a Toyota. But it doesn’t significantly do anything better or even on par with a Tesla or the (cheaper) RAV4 gas or hybrid.

There are happy and unhappy Tesla owners. So, I'd say whether Teslas are works of art or not, only people who own them have the appropriate rights to input their says.

Everyone I know that drives a Tesla loves it and owning a Tesla is appropriate in their career and living situation. They are white collar workers, they own home, and make more than enough to afford Tesla. This is a free country, you make your own money, you spend it how you like, I'm in no position to judge you.

I own a '21 Toyota Camry XSE because I think the car is going to be good for me in a decade ahead. But I have decided that after the Camry falls apart in the far future, I'll purchase an EV from Toyota.

There are two reason why people hate Tesla and Tesla drivers. I think I should say "two reasons people discriminate against Teslas and Tesla owners."

1. Tesla owners must be rich. They drop money on Tesla. $20,000 for a software. They must be stupid and don't care about their money. They should give money to the poor in stead.

Well, first of all. Why should the rich share to the poor? Why don't the poor work harder and learn harder to become rich?

Secondly, again, people spend their money however they seem fit. Teslas are good for them? Great, their choice. Did you give them any money? No? Then easy, shut up.

2. Now this is a ridiculous reason. I've seen diesel trucks smoking Tesla. You think it's funny and Tesla drivers deserve it? No, it's not funny. All Tesla drivers I know in my life are the sweetest people on Earth and well educated, respectable members of society.

And out of nowhere, there are diesel truck drivers, not all of them, I know there are plenty of nice diesel truck driver who would go out of their way to help anyone in need,

But there are diesel truck drivers who think, "I'm American! I'm old school! V8, the American Muscle way boys! Diesel and gas engine all the way boys! Tesla and EV owners are low life liberals! I have to smoke them and make fun of them!"

What I think of them is, "You're an adult, and a human, not a monkey, so act like an adult and don't be a monkey."

The Tesla drivers you smoke have higher standards than you. They are just on their way to where they need to be, peacefully, and you decide to smoke them to show your Americanness and kid-like manliness domination. And in your head, you think the people who see you doing it think, "Oh he must be a real man, American V8 diesel boys!"

But I think your junk is as small as a pencil. If you cause an accident because of your unreal "ness'es" It's all your fault and you have to deal with the consequences.
