Is the Corolla GR a disastrous move for Toyota

I was reading some articles about the new upcoming 2023 Toyota Corolla GR. According the specs it has:

A 1.6 3-cylinder turbocharged engine making 300 horsepower and 273 lb.-ft. of torque. It is mated to a 6 speed manual transmission and has an special AWD drivetrain.

Even when I first looked at the car itself from the photos, it looked cool and it be something that I would want to drive for a fun toy. However, even with a turbocharged 3-cylinder engine making as much horsepower as a modern V6 today, do think that this vehicle will last as long as their 4-cylinders or do you think they will break down before they reach 100k miles?

It sounds disastrous in terms of long-term reliability but most people looking to buy new high-performance cars are probably not concerned about that.

There's this thing called trade-offs. No, a 300hp turbo GR Corolla is not going to be as long-lived and reliable as a 150hp Corolla any more than the 150hp Corolla is going to be as fast as the GR Corolla.

Of course, what else is as reliable and long-lived as a regular Corolla? It's not a long list. The only way that you can get the same reliability as a Corolla with significantly more performance is to "simplify and add lightness", but unfortunately they stopped building MR2s, and the Toyota-engined Lotuses are soon not to be built (they were/are supercharged anyway).

I would gladly substitute a different plane of existence, but have yet to have any luck locating one not requiring compromise.

It's still a small displacement 3-cylinder turbo engine. Nope...I'll pass.

Yes but at what RPM?

6500

So 1st of all... who drives at 6500 RPM? You will probably never experience those 300hp.

Most of the time you need low end power.

2nd how long do you think a lil 3-banger would last, screaming along at 6k?

If Toyota can some how pull this off and make it last as long or longer than their other vehicles with relative minimal maintenance, that would be a miracle. Looking forward to see how it all unfolds!

That sounds like a Yaris GR put in a heavier chassis on meth and steroids combined. I think it would be wiser to output that much power from an Inline-4, but even then I'd hope 300 HP coming from an I4 can last long, realistically a V6 outputting that much power would last the longest.

I think you might have accidently double posted your answer.

In my opinion, it wouldn't last as long as a naturally aspirated Corolla. But, I think people wanted the same engine from the Toyota GR Yaris. I can't wait to see how it compares to the Civic Type R.

If you are buying a car because you think they look "awesome" you have missed the boat, @joec.

I used to own a 68' corvette I bought because it looked awesome.  Ive been driving practical boring Hondas, toyotas and acura most of my life, time to live a little

Scotty, what are your thoughts on Toyota bringing their new sports car

the search box on his Youtube channel is your friend.

It's obviously a top shelf engine.

Might last 300,000 miles with me driving it.

The old me of 30 years ago, not so much.

Sure looks like an awesome little machine though.

AFAIK all the longest running engines have low HP ti high L figures. So like the Toyota 1UZ-Fe at 4L with 250HP and upwards, and the Cummins 6BT 12valve at 5.9L and 160 > 215 HP.

So I wouldn't touch cars with high HP and litre size with a barge pole.

I think it's just an answer to sporty Honda Civic Si. How high is the chance a regular person going to work and back everyday will ever hit 300 HP? Many people nowadays buy vehicles based on coolness, not practicality. Heck, even cops don't use all their HP. I've seen people who paid $1,000+ to have black logos on their cars. They could have bought black logo overlays for $15ish on eBay, lol.

Hey Scotty,

First of all I like to say that. I love your YouTube channel. Learned a great lot of things and thank you so much for your videos on troubleshooting car issues.

I like to ask a question about what’s your opinion on the new GR Corolla that’s coming up here in US. My wife has been driving the 2020 Corolla hatchback and she loves that car. Far better then my current 2015 Scion FR-S. I have been thinking about trading my Scion for the new GR Corolla, assume if I can get it for MSRP or below if I get lucky.
whats is your thought on GR Corolla?

I want one, they look awesome.  There will be large mark ups on these just like the Civic typer R

Scotty, what are your thoughts on Toyota bringing their new sports car, the GR Corolla, to the United States with this being their first sports car being truly made by Toyota for quite a long time? Does Toyota still have it in them to make sports cars?
