Hello Scotty,
I'm hoping you can help me out here. My 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK) 3.7L V6 with 163K miles on it runs great... but it's consuming oil with no evidence other than needing to add a quart every 1200 miles or so! I took a short video and put it on youtube, showing smooth idle, looking under hood, and looking at exhaust. No evidence of any leak, no evidence of coolant in oil or vice-versa, and no exhaust smoke!! https://youtu.be/D-AIrRgh4Ww
Any help much appreciated!! Thanks in advance 🙂
Bill
Put your fingers on the exhaust tip and you will find the burnt oil.
If its not leaking then its burning it
Clearly that's the case. I'm wanting to know WHY, and how it can burn this much oil without producing smoky exhaust??
The catalyst is probably doing a good job filtering the smoke and masking the issue. Most cars leak oil around the piston rings when they grow old. No much that can be done, proper fixes are too expensive
1qt every 1200 miles though, that seems like a lot to me. Is that enough consumption to kill other parts like the cat?
Sure it is. Just a matter of time.
Some car dealers would tell you a quart every 1000 miles is "normal" on a car (
if it's under warranty), but after 160k miles, that certainly might be more than you want, but not the least bit unusual. You probably don't have to worry about your cat clogging for quite a few more miles. If it would help you sleep better, you could do a compression test to quantify your engine's wear.
I would assume that the catalyst will suffer from the oil consumption
Thanks Glen. It's burnt oil from day 1, but I hear that's par for the course with Jeep LOL. No complaints whatsoever otherwise. Only major repair was a new cat last summer, only minor repairs were wiper motor and starter. Everything else, just routine maintenance! Currently at 164,164 miles
