Keep or sell my 2016 Subaru WRX?

Hey Scotty,

I went from a 1997 Toyota 4Runner, sold at 380k miles to a 2016 Subaru WRX with a manual transmission. Just paid it off and have 63K miles on it. Really miss having a SUV with a automatic transmission.

My question is should I sell my Subaru WRX before I have any major issues with it later on and get a newer used Toyota Truck or SUV? Or should I keep my Subaru and get older used Jeep, Toyota Land Cruiser or any good deal I can find on a older used SUV or truck?

I’ve had zero issues with my Subaru. I do my oil changes around 4-5k miles and the schedule maintenance, 30K and 60K. All maintenance have been done at the dealership I bought it from. Only modifications is a K&N air filter and a muffler delete. I always make sure to have the engine running idle for a few minutes before I turn off and on the engine. I’m hard on the car at times but I think I make for it with all the maintenance being done before the miles due. I’m just scared for it being turbocharged that one day the motor much just blow on me... I’m just stressing over nothing and keep the Subaru as long has she’s running? I’ll love to keep it has long as I can without breaking my wallet.

I have a close friend with a 2015 Subaru WRX and he blew his engine twice with zero modifications on it. First time around 70k miles on it. Sold it right after the 2nd time at 113K miles. He also said he was very hard on his car.

Thanks guys, any input will help me get this weight off my chest.

The Subaru is a standard transmission so I keep it and getting older Toyota or something to knock around with

A paid off vehicle means money in your pocket that Subaru should last awhile if you’re not driving the piss out of it all the time. Keep it and use what would be your payment and save up for a decent used Toyota SUV or truck and pass on the Jeep.

I have a Subaru, they will last, not as long as a Toyota but you will be fine, when it starts to have problems sell it then.

Any car can break.  But it's a manual WRX - they're pretty durable.  If you sell it and check back in another 140,000 miles, it's 22-year-old 4th owner is gonna be putting on a cold-air intake, COBB tuner, and a new cat-back exhaust.

But I know what you mean.  I have a 2018 WRX and I feel a lot the same ambivalence.  Some days I'm sitting in traffic working the clutch for an hour and I think, "I'd sure rather have something more livable."  But then I find an open canyon road and give it the beans and think, "I'd be crazy to ever get rid of this car."  I guess it comes down to what you want to drive.

I will say this:  No doubt there will be big expenses sooner or later.  But the nice thing about a WRX is that they hold their value.  It's not like a Kia Rio or Chevy Sonic or something where if something breaks you just junk the car (no offense intended to those who have either of those).  It will always be worth it to fix a WRX.
