[Solved] Local Mavis scammed me?

Hello,

I believe my local Mavis scammed me. My Honda minivan had a whining noise and we took it in. First they told us it was the power steering pump. We had it repaired. Then they told us it was the Serpentine belt or the water pump or the timing belt. We had all repaired. Then the minivan broke down and we had it towed at our own expense to Mavis. Turns out it was the alternator- which we had repaired. The store manager admitted they made mistakes and gave us the district managers name and phone to as for a refund of all previous work. I told the district manager the story of what happened - twice as he said he didn’t remember the first time I spoke to him. Now it has been a month and he won’t call me back. Is there anything that I can do??? Or I am out the $3500+ in repairs? I am a disabled woman who has MS on a limited income and these repairs have upset me so much.

Small claims court.  Go to Mavis corporate first to see if you can get some satisfaction.  Keep records and receipts for everything.  Find a good, local mechanic.

Very sorry to hear that, it's why we tell people to stay away from those chains and find a good independent mechanic.

It's clear that Mavis was incompetent. Any good mechanic would have been able to isolate where the noise was coming from. You could try escalating the problem up to Mavis' CEO office. Looking it up, it appears that they have two co-CEOs, David Sorbaro and Stephen Sorbaro. Their corporate office is at 358 Saw Mill River Rd, Millwood, NY 10546. Send them a written letter explaining the situation, that the local management is stonewalling you, and that you are discussing this publicly on Scotty Kilmer's web site. I'd send it via certified mail with return receipt. Carbon copy it to your state attorney general's office and list that cc line on the letter. You could also get local news media involved, especially if there is a news program that investigates consumer ripoffs.

If that doesn't get you any action you'd probably have to take them to small claims court. Unless you have a friend or family member who is an attorney it would cost more to hire them than what Mavis ripped you off for.

By the way, when looking for info on the company I ran across their Better Business Bureau rating. It seems likely that yours is not an isolated case.
