Looking for a car for my son

My son is going into his 3rd year of university and has rode the life out of his first car (2009 toyota camry). He has some money saved up and I will put the rest for a total of 20k. He is looking for a more sporty ride. His first option is bmw but the ones that you can find for 20k are not worth it, specially after 100km, I have worked on thr b58 engine before and is the only bmw engine I trust. I have then come up with a list of cars I want to know how many kms I should buy with in the 20k budget. 2015-2016 Lexus is250/350, 2016 Lexus rc350, Acura TLX 2015-2016, Scion Tc, 2020 Corolla apex, 2020 honda accord 2.0t. Any other good shouts ? Also automatic transmission, I have not taught him how to drive manual yet and he is not too into learning it either. Thanks.

Consider the Acura ILX. They phased it out when they brought back the Integra.

I'm soon to graduate from my masters program. I'm looking for a new car as well. currently deciding between a new es350, is300, ux300h, or a camry hybrid. Also looking at a bmw as well. If your son plans for a bmw, buy or lease a new one. If you buy it keep it for the duration of the warranty or duration of the lease (if leasing). They are fun to drive when they are new. Otherwise he will have to start shelling out for the high maintenance of bmws once they start having issues after the warranty period

2015-2016 Lexus is250/350, 2016 Lexus rc350, Acura TLX 2015-2016, Scion Tc, 2020 Corolla apex, 2020 honda accord 2.0t.

All of the Lexus IS, RC and Acura TLX require at least 91 octane gas. Anything less will start creating engine knocks which will damage it overtime and you'll get less performance and fuel efficiency. Once in a blue moon you can do 100% regular at the bare minimum.

Scion TC, Corolla and accord all take regular 87.

Have your son rent one of these cars on turo and have him test drive and see what he likes best. I've rented cars from zipcar while in undergrad and got a better idea on what i want. (ex: rented a corolla and hyundai elyntra. I prefer the elyntra over the corolla)

the only good hyundai is a rental

I've also rented a chevy malibu and that was the worst rental I've had lol. I loved the hyundai.

I wouldn't own either of those

I would lease the BMW. You would lose more in depreciation when you go to sell it after 3-5 years than what you paid for a lease of the equivalent amount of time. Also why did I know this was you after the first sentence 🤣
