Hi all,
Last year I purchased a 2003 Chevy Suburban 2500 8.1L, Runs well and I didn't pay much for it ($800), no mechanical issues, but as it had become a spare vehicle for the prior owner there were a few maintenance things that needed repair (such as worn out parking break shoes etc. nothing major) In any case, this is where I began noticing some oddities about the SUV. Mainly that I would purchase certain parts for it, what I would get would be drastically different and undersized compared to what I needed.
As it turns out, It is a heavy duty variant of the suburban 2500. Had no idea they existed until just last week when a mechanic had to order parts from out of town because it is such and he informed me. After doing a bit more research, it appears that they did not sell all that well and because of that and the fact that they appear to be mostly used as fleet vehicles, I am having a hard time finding much information on exactly what parts of the SUV are different than the standard 2500. I know there is a beefier frame, and now know that the parking break shoes are much heavier duty. (as I side note. If you ever do look at suburbans. 8 lugs on the wheels normally means its an HD variant. For anyone that doesn't know as I didn't before)
Does any one know what parts are not interchangeable between the 2500 and 2500HD variants of the suburban? And furthermore, of those parts, are Chevy Silverado 2500HD parts interchangeable? I have yet to find any main stream parts suppliers that list an HD version of a suburban and being that I do prefer to do as much of my own work as possible it is important to me that I can source the parts needed for basic maintenance/work/repairs. (also are silverado 2500HD front bumpers interchangeable with it as well? Would love to eventually build this into a somewhat basic rugged overlanding vehicle and basically no one produces offroad bumpers for the suburban 2500 it seems)
Lastly, If any one has any fun information on HD Suburbans, I would love to hear! I always find it interesting to hear more on these things and the most I have gathered from this is that there's some basic things that were beefed up, and they are popular for armored fleet vehicles.
Thanks so much!
well unfortunately when you get into the 2500s they're pretty much custom-made vehicles there are over two dozen different variations that can be purchased. The only way you can really tell is by the VIN number and calling a dealer and they can tell you which parts yours has and which parts it doesn't because they are actually custom made
Thanks so much @scottykilmer ! I will have to do that. That explains why there is very little information on the web!
