I just bought a 2006 toyota highlander with 123k miles and whenever i go from reverse to drive there is a loud squeaking from the rear driver's side wheel. Also, i took it to Silverstar, a car wash where you have to put your car in neutral, and they said that the rear driver's side wheel is locked up. Any idea what the issue could be?
Update: It was a rusted in rotor so i took it to the shop and they replaced it for me
Probably a stuck brake caliper or stuck parking brake.
Likely because i was testing the parking brake, how can i get it unstuck?
Well, I'd start by jacking the car up removing the wheel and having a look. Maybe something obvious, maybe not. The cable might be binding up, it could be several things. If the passenger side rear wheel spins free, a visual comparison between the two might be helpful. If doing that is outside of your comfort zone just take it to a trustworthy mechanic and explain it to them.
Set and release the parking brake a few times to see if that will help get it to let go. I had this happen with my truck a couple years ago and it would bind the driver's side drum brake every time I used the parking brake. Chock your wheels and climb under there if you can, find the parking brake cables and give them a yank in different directions. I figured out with my truck if I pulled it straight out from the frame toward the wheel, it would release. I replaced the cable and it hasn't been an issue since.
