Scotty, in a recent video, you said that BMW's can be good if you maintain them. Would it be a bad idea to buy one under 50k miles?
I hitched a ride once when I lived in Ireland, and guy giving me the ride, told me that he only bought bmw, because once when he was in a major roll over, and walked away without a scratch, so he wouldn't drive anything else.
Unless you live in Europe, and or can afford the maintenance costs, I wouldn't recommend buying one.
@shanemul please copy & paste your reply as an ‘Answer’ below. Thank you.
BMW's and Mercedes vehicles are finely tuned machines. Nothing drives like a BMW. That said, you absolutely, positively must maintain them exactly as the manufacturer recommends. I had a BMW 335xi coupe and LOVED it. But I had to maintain it religiously and the maintenance packages start to add up as the mileage goes up.
There is a difference between owning a BMW and "owning" a BMW. You may be able to make the payments, but if you can't part with $1000 for service or repairs at any given second, do not buy one.
Even at low mileage, you do have to spend a huge amount of money when the electronics go out around 100,000 miles. If I was buying a BMW, I would lease it. I don't buy it new or used.
Even at low milage they are still endless moneypits.
Never buy a German vehicle unless you are prepared to spend some serious money for maintenance and repairs; they are not cheap. If you can do a lot of the work yourself and understand those vehicles really well like Scotty, The Car Wizard, and BMW Master Mechanics and know where to get parts at wholesale prices then it might make sense to buy; but for the rest of us mortals we are better off leasing them.
just get a lexus GS theyre fun enough and wont break down
all german cars are money pits even if u spend a fortune maintaining them at correct intervals
No matter how many miles you have, BMW's require high meaintneance each year. There are a lot of car brands, and I would never choose a BMW over anythng else because it is just such low quality and everything breaks on it all the time. I would buy a BMW if it was under a long extended warranty and it is still covered. Cars can get expensive and if you enjoy nice cars, then don't waste unneeded money on a piece of crap German car. It gets higher insurance premiums, it needs a ton of maintneance, it gets crappy mpg's, it requires premium gas, and yet with all these expenses, you still will probably only drive 15k miles a year and spend like 3k a year for all the stuff I just mentioned. You will be broke in no time. The car will lose it's value in no time as the mileage goes up.
How much money do you plan on spending for maintenance of this vehicle? A decent amount?
Had a 2001 and 2005 3 series coupe. They are awesome cars to drive, but as said already, be prepared to spend lots of money to maintain it. Once I was out of CPO covered maintenance period (100k miles), I let them go as I didn't want to pay a kings ransom for service.
