Mercedes CLK320

I found this 2004 Mercedes CLK320 for $7k. Has around 112k miles on it. This doesn't seem like the kind of car ppl would abuse. This isn't the convertible version either. I know youre not a fan of mercedes cars, but if this car passes a pre purchase inspection, would this car be a good buy?

This kind of question comes up frequently. Search the board for the woes that you are very likely to face with an old Mercedes.

Be sure the pre-purchase is done by a Benz technician and not just a general shop. IF it passes that inspection be prepared to keep it for life. It's on its 3rd owner and I'm curious to know why it has not been sold for over 3 months. It is a coupe and a rear wheel drive... So abuse is still in question imo. I also think the car is too expensive for it's year. Over 18 years old right now so expect plastics and rubbers and electronics to be bad. If not you got lucky.

I wouldn't spend more then  5200.00.   . 7 grand is way way to much. You have to be very careful with Mercedes. Even if you have it checked out and is in perfect condition that really doesn't mean anything. Once Mercedes hit 75,000 miles things start to go wrong. When they hit 100,000 alot of electronics go bad. But anything can happen at anytime. Even at low mileage. I have a e320 and I love the car but it's a headache. I had so many little things go wrong . I always try to warn people and talk them out of buying one. Here is a true short story as a example why not to buy one. A women went to a friend of mine about buying a car. It was a 2012 clk350 with 65,000 miles one owner certified pre-owned. The dealership let her take the car to my friend who is a German car specialist who specializes in Mercedes. He and his partner went through the car checking every nut and bolt. They also used there star computer and everything checked out. She bought the car and after 6 months the car started to have electrical issues. The dealership said they fixed the problem and everything is good now  Around 5 months later everything went down hill.  The car was no longer drivable. It completely died. She only had 69,000 on car. She took it to Mercedes and they said it will cost 16,000 to fix. She took it back to my friends shop and he said they aren't lying but We can fix it for 10,000 there was a massive failure with electronics. Such a stupid little issues caused all this. The rubber on the positive battery cable deteriorated and shorted out. It ended up frying half of the electronics and burned out 50% of the modules including the ECU/ pcm, tcu and all the sams. She only put 4,000 miles on car and had it for 11 months. Lucky for her she filed a lawsuit and won. She claimed Mercedes knew the wiring was faulty and  it was a lemon  but Mercedes still sold it as certified pre-owned.  The dealership immediately settled.  Point of this story is anything can happen at anytime. Even having the car checked out by Mercedes experts doesn't mean it's good. Mechanically they are great, electrical wise there a nightmare. Granted this might not be the case for you. The car might be really good. Best of luck.


I'll look for ones that offer a warranty on the car (from the dealer, third party warranties are often scams) I don't plan on keeping it for too long as the used car market should stabilize by the end or the year (btw, all the Hondas and toyotas i looked at cost over $15k for one that isn't really old or doesn't have nearly 200000 miles on it)

I believe it, I've seen it. Prices are crazy right now. A guy that lives a few blocks away from me is trying to sell his 2004 Accord with 145,710 miles in s**t condition for 10,000.00 ..Finding one with a warranty is a good idea. Make sure it covers electrical if possible. That's the main concern. Also try to find one that DOES NOT  have air matic. That is just another headache if it goes bad and the price to fix is crazy high . Most important is have someone look it over who really knows the car.
