Hey, Scotty, have followed and learned from you for some years now.  Thanks for all the help!

Trying to get new vehicle for MIL....(she won't go used, wants factory warranty).....

here's the situation:  Pugetopolis, 5-6 kmiles/yr, mobility issues getting in/out of sedans, wants to use the Hyundai recall rebate for current owners (~$2000, has a Sorento). Needs the best sensor suite possible.

Choices we are steering her to are: Rav4, CRV, Outback, Tucson.  This will be her last vehicle, she is 84.  we have finally convinced her to avoid the extra $ for a hybrid.

your thoughts? What have we missed?

thanks!

Hello, wiseimages. I have a 2000 RAV4 with 260,000 miles on it that I bought new. It still runs great. Has had only a few minor repairs beyond maintenance through the years. I've sworn at it a few times, but mostly I swear by it. There are few better-built cars.
So I'd vote for a RAV4 to carry your early-model mother in law.
I hope this helps.

I have a 2000 RAV4 that I use as a daily driver. It has about 260,000 miles on it, and the only large component failure was the air conditioner about 10,000 miles ago. I've performed most of the maintenance, including a radiator swap about 15K ago. It's not difficult to work on. It still looks good and the ride is firm but it can be driven 400 miles in a day without discomfort. As I said, this is a 20-year-old car, with original struts and shocks. I expect the new version has been much tamed. And, of course, my old RAV keeps on plugging along. I've sworn at it a few times, but I swear by it all the time.

I hope this helps.

I’ve driven the last generations RAV4 and CRV regularly. And they are both excellent vehicles. Both are about 5 years old. RAV4 has about 50K miles. And the CRV about 90K miles. And I think they would be great vehicles for an octogenarian.

I am not so experienced with the Outback. My only qualm is servicing the spark plugs on the boxer engine. Otherwise, I think they have excellent product.

I don’t recommend the CX5. While the car itself is fine, the user interface for the radio and AC and such is confusing AF. Especially for an octogenarian.

Make sure to look at the UI.  I know some older people have trouble with push button start, so whatever car has a regular ignition might be best.

so, thanks to all for confirming/supporting what we all know anyway....... 😀

After getting in and out, doing multiple test drives, she chose a 2021 RAV 4 Limited....full set of driver assists and sensor suite.

Ease of entry/exit and comfort/confidence in driving, were the most important criteria.  The CRV came in second, but without 360 view, was out of the running.  She vetoed the Buick when engine history and Chinese assembly were explained.  She'll be even happier about that when I tell her about the brake recall!

total of 32 hours taking her around to area dealerships and supporting the actual purchase........we need to take a break from each other!

(It's wife's turn now...... 😆 )

other info.....we were told the 21 buick encore GX's were still in transit, boat hasn't landed yet.

what a great community this is....thanks, Scotty, for taking the lead, setting the tone, and allowing it to grow.
