New CRV hybrid opinions

Scotty, my daughter is buying a 2022 or 2023 Honda CRV Hybrid. Is this a good suv to buy? We have two 2011 CRV's both with 160000 miles plus that I do minor regular maintenance. They both have run pretty good.

Steer her away from the hybrid, if possible -

Engine-wise the 2022, with the 2.4L Honda K-series engines WITHOUT the ZF transmission is potentially the most reliable. Although it will be a CVT, Honda makes decent CVT’s. And the K-engine has been around for 20 years, with a good track record.

But the 2023 is the brand new body style. And has a super nice interior. Downside is that it is a turbo engine. Honda turbos aren’t bad, it’s just one more item to worry about later on. If you hybrid, they’d you are potentially dealing with a hybrid battery down the line. Honda’s latest hybrid technology seems pretty solid though and the way it works, it is practically an EV. It is the same technology used in the Civic hybrid, the Insight, and to a certain extent the Accord hybrid.

I personally like hybrids, so I would take the chance on the 2023 CRV hybrid. Although it is a new CRV, the hybrid technology behind it has been used for 5-7 years.  Not as long as the Prius and Toyota tech 20+ years, but respectable enough to be reliable so far.

If you want the safer bet, 2022 CRV with the K-Engine and CVT.

A calculated but manageable risk, 2023 CRV hybrid.

Honda is still selling the K24 in brand new vehicles?

Dude. I think you are right. I just went on memory that they still had the K24. It looks like only turbos and hybrids are available for the end run end run of the previous generation CRV.

For sure they don’t make them for the newest generation CRV.
