Definitely not new. Even used ones will be pretty expensive. Get a used Corolla.

Normally I'd say used, but not in this market. And new is way too much.

I'd listen to @mountainmanjoe and downsize to something more affordable for the times.

You have to be honest with yourself - what will you be using the 4runner for, will you be using it to its full potential, and can you get away with a cheaper vehicle with similar functionality?  4runners - new and used - are expensive.

Below your post above, if you can list all your constraints for your next vehicle (is this going to be a daily?) we can maybe help you find the right vehicle and save you some money.

I would say used, and I remember reading somewhere that you should pay no more than 10-20% of your income on a car payment (assuming a 5 year or less loan) including insurance costs.

Based on your salary, shoot for about $500 or less per month. Insurance is cheaper on older cars.

Also factor in any other recurring expenses, e.g., mortgage, food, taxes, school loans, etc.

Get an F 150 from the 80's or 90's, and put a new engine and trans in it.

and thumb your nose at the Corollas as you pass them

Definitely used.  I'm dating myself here but I've had two.  An '86 with the roll bar, removal top, and 22R engine (indestructible but didn't have enough horsepower to get out of it's own way), and a '93.  Loved them both, despite their wimpy engines.  In 2003 they finally started putting decent engines in them.  The '93 had a 3.0L V6 that fell into the head gasket recall.  Blew while I was in Memphis for a funeral... local dealer towed it to their shop, put a new engine in it and it didn't cost me a thing.  A week later I drove it home.  Big props for Toyota standing by their product there.

Anyway, go used.  But right now is a bad time to buy used; from a dealer, anyway.  Maybe look for one for sale by a private party that isn't ridiculously inflated and doesn't have issues (have it checked).

Another reason to go used depends on where you live.  In my state, Kentucky, the annual tax on a new 4Runner will be criminal.  It'll cost a small fortune just to renew the registration.

for my state registration is gowing to be like $350 usd

I would buy used, buying a new Toyota 4runner is absurd considering how outdated it is for such a high price. They hold their value and buying a used one is not gonna harm ur wallet. Just make sure it runs good and a mechanic says it's good.
