No crank no start

Topic starter

2009 Ford f250 superduty 6.4L powerstroke diesel 4x4 130,000mi

No crank no start issues.

Only sounds i can hear is the solenoid on the starter click. Not sure if fuel pump is running when key is turned to on.

Tested:

Battery voltage good.

Voltage loss to terminal none.

Live voltage to starter good.

Bench tested starter gear pops out and spins (plan on taking it to oriellys to be sure)

Can feel starter relay click but haven't been able to pull it out to test thru voltage.

No fuses seem to be popped.

Other notes:

Replaced ignition switch with no change.

*Crossing live wire to signal wire on starter while installed only produces solenoid click, no crank*

Starter was replaced just 2 months ago.

Don't have a load tester but the batteries are healthy and charged as 1 was replaced with the starter.

What else am I missing or should recheck?

Have not tried to turn the motor by hand. But definitely will try.

The no crank no start happened whem the truck stopped for fuel but then would not turn on.

Ok so I tried turning the crankshaft bolt (as hard to access as it was) and i was able to turn it. I wasnt able to make sure it could do a full revolution but i could get at least 90° out of it.

Do i need to rotate it more or what else should i check?
Im not ready to give in but accepting that reality

Update:
Tested battery to engine ground : good voltage on both batteries
Took batteries and starter to get tested: batteries good but low from sitting.

Starter solenoid was bad. 2 tests at 2 stores it failed the solenoid.

Wanted to update for found cause.

Check the voltage between the positive battery terminal and the engine block.  Could be a bad ground.

What should i be looking for when i do that?

at least 25V

are you able to turn over the engine by hand?

You haven't ruled out weak batteries. voltage alone is not a good indicator of health. Only a load test can do that.

So it doesn't matter if the fuel pump is running or not for the engine to crank.

Maybe grab a set of long jumper cables, and assuming your battery is fully charged, connect one side to the battery and go under the truck and touch the positive side of the jumper cable to the "S" connection on the starter solenoid.

(That's the connection with the thin gauge wire going to it on the  starter solenoid)

If you have a good battery the starter pinion should engage and crank the engine.

If it doesn't you have a bad starter or solenoid.

If it does then the issue is in the wiring/relay/fuse in the circuit

It was the solenoid on the starter.
