Hey Scotty! I have made some great car decisions that in the past three years thanks to your advice but I need to ask a question to clarify your advice. Other than electronics components how do I know if I need OEM or if it would be safe to by aftermarket parts? Is there a general rule to follow?
@reb3832
I think it’s always best to stick with OEM, it’s hard to trust aftermarket support on electronics components
Precision parts and electronic parts should be OEM. But plenty of aftermarket parts are great. Read reviews and don't be too afraid to try
@darindux
I agree with Darin. Do your research. Some aftermarket parts work great and cost a fraction of what the OEM price is. Had the electric trunk latch fail on my 2015 Malibu. OEM part, 150 bucks. I researched others and found an aftermarket one that works great for 25 bucks! Looks like the factory part, works well.
As others have said, research, research, research. Also, some aftermarket parts (struts, for example) can last a lot longer than OEM, depending on the brand.

I guess I'm asking what parts, other than electronic components, should be OEM? If I have an issue and I want to know right away what options I have... Or don't have.
I cant think of anything non electrical that I would not buy aftermarket if it was quality parts. Assuming its not something like a VW Diesel or something odd like that, if it were I would be really careful about it. I very seldom buy OEM unless I feel like I absolutely have to. I have a VW TDI and were I to replace anything on the fuel system, for example, I would use OEM.
It might help to list the vehicle and the parts in question.
