Hey Scotty, I bought a 2006 Mustang GT and the previous owner put 10w30 instead of 5w20. Do you think I can change it back to the recommended 5w20 without any problems with my engine?
@munchie31
it shouldn't cause any problems unless the thicker oil was trying to hide a internal problem with the engine. the thinner oil will be way better for the engine on start up in the colder climates depending on how cold it gets where you live .
Ahh okay thanks! I’ve been stressed out all day when I found out about it...
after change it back stick with that one.
@theakalegend
Thank you! I want to keep the car for as long as I can lol idk why they would put that oil instead of the recommended one.

@matthew-schneweis
Thanks bro I’ll change it ASAP, I think the previous owner didn't know what he was doing.
There are a few reasons people will use heavier weight oil but it's always best to use the oil recommend by the manufacturer in modern engines. If you don't it can cause the engine to wear out prematurely because the oil will not flow properly to the top of the engine especially when its cold. To be honest that guy using that thicker oil was an idiot and might have done damage to the engine. I would have the car check by a mechanic you trust to see if the engine has an signs of premature wear.

@jacksonishere
Thanks man I appreciate the help, I was stressed all day trying to figure out what to do. I plan on keeping this car for a long time and I’m not sure how long he had this oil on the car for... hopefully it didn’t mess anything up
If you take it to a quality mechanic they can hook up their expensive scan tool and tell you if the engine has any premature wear. GL my dude
I live in Florida where it's warm all the time. Been thinking of going to 5 W 30. 54 K Mile car...
Some advice. When you change your oil, either clean (if it's metal) or replace (if it's plastic) your PCV valve. If this gets clogged or blocked, the engine will leak oil everywhere.
You should be fine.

Thank you!
