Oil conundrum

Hey Scotty,

I was hoping to get your advice, I bought a 2021 Mazda CX-5 Carbon Turbo. I took it in for my first oil change a few months ago and they told me that the oil Mazda recommends is conventional rather than synthetic like you would normally expect with vehicles that have a turbo. I'm not sure if I should put what the factory recommends or use synthetic because that would make more sense. What would you do?

Thanks

Nick

Use synthetic unless you want premature turbocharger failure due to coking. (Oil breaks down and forms solid deposits in the turbo bearings due to high heat. Synthetic oils have much higher heat tolerance.) The dealer probably is too cheap to stock synthetic oil.

Get a synthetic one with correct viscosity.

The manual doesn't say anything about conventional oil.

I would use "synthetic".

Recommended Oil

U.S.A., Canada

SKYACTIV-G 2.5T

Use SAE 5W-30 engine oil. If SAE 5W-30 engine oil is not available, use SAE 0W-30 or SAE 10W-30 engine oil.

The quality designation SM or SN, or ILSAC must be on the label.

Do you mean dealership? They’re probably trying to palm off whatever they have in stock this month..

As others have rightly said, go by your owner’s manual.

Go off you’re manual.
