How worried should i be, IF (heaven forbid) my 19-year old original airbags deploy? They are the originals and my beloved bug is a 2006 (i am only owner). Should i worry…or just let them be?
If they're the Takkota airbags that sent debris into the car's interior when deployed, I would take the fuses out so that they don't deploy if you get into an accident. Nothing like a rudimentary claymore exploding in your face if you're unfortunate enough to get into an accident. Wear a seat belt.
@justin-shepherd
thank you for your response. from the research i did the Takata air bags were in vehicles 2009+. Mine is not a takata air bag (2006 model VW beetle) but after 18 years is it safe? I sure wouldn’t want a ‘claymore’ exploding in my face (as you put it)!
I wouldn't risk it. They were recalled for a reason. Just take the fuse out of the SRS system.
When I refer to a claymore, it's an anti-personnel mine that's above ground. It consists of a hardened steel plate on one end (the end facing you) and an explosive with ball bearings on the other. (With the airbags, the side facing you isn't the "safe" side, it's the explosive side, but there's no ball bearings, etc. ). It's similar to the idea of an airbag, but the claymore is lethal.
It's probably more likely they wouldn't work at all rather than going off randomly. My airbags are 28 years old and I've had no indication of problems with them. As long as you don't have Takata airbags I wouldn't worry about it, just make sure to wear your seat belts in case they don't work.
