Output shaft moves

Hello,

I've been experiencing some issues with my 06 Lexus IS250 AWD AT - 143k miles.

It started shaking/vibrating at any speed however is more noticeable when driving over 20mh. The shaking feels on the center of the body and not on the steering wheel nor when breaking.

I have replaced the motor and transmission mounts, front and rear drive shaft but the vibration is still there. One of the things I noticed while changing the rear drive shaft is the transmission output shaft (see picture), moved when I pushed it with my finger. I'm not sure if this is normal but I suspect this is where the problem is.

Can someone help me with this?

Thanks.

Wil

Yeah, not supposed to be any side-to-side movement. A whole tail shaft extension housing sub assembly isn't cheap. Service will probably say it's not serviceable. You might be able pull the tail shaft and bring it to a shop to press out the old bearing to get a part number off it and then press in a new one. I did similar job on an older 02 Outback.

Thanks for the input. Did you experience any vibration while driving before fixing the issue?

Yes, and there was a small leak coming from there on mine so I really needed to get it fixed. Was not too bad on the older Subaru. Probably going to be a little pricey being a Lexus.

When you say moved, in and out or side to side? Shouldn’t move at all, but as they age you can get a little back and forth play, 1/8th “ is worn but kinda ok. Anymore than that isn’t. If you have any side to side or up and down that’s no supposed to happen. Means the bearing on that shaft is shot.

My apologies, I meant it moves side to side not in and out.

Any idea if the entire transmission must be rebuild/replaced or just the extension housing components?

Thanks for the reply.

It really depends how much wear and damage there is inside the unit.

Hello Scotty and crew,

Is it normal for an output shaft to move side to side when touched? While replacing the old drive shaft on my 06 Lexus IS250 AWD 144K miles with a new one, I pushed the output shaft with my finger from the right to the left just to see and it moves. I've been experiencing some vibration coming from the center of the vehicle while driving at any speed but is more noticeable at higher speeds. I replaced both driveshafts and the vibration is still there.

Thanks for your videos and advise.
