Overheating 2005 Chrysler Pacifica 3.8

I've been told I had a faulty thermostat and gasket. I have been putting water in my reservoir because I was losing fluid. Winter storm hit recently and I warmed my van up and tried going to work. I got approximately 3-5 minutes down the road and my temperature light came on started dinging. I turned around and came home and parked. When I got out I recognized smoke coming from under the hood. Please tell me if I replace the thermostat and gasket and put in antifreeze I should be alright. My only vehicle to get to work!!!

Told by who? Were they talking about the thermostat gasket or the head gasket?

There's no way we can tell that from here with the information provided. More diagnosis is needed. Given that the vehicle is 19 years old a new thermostat would certainly be a good place to start but you may have other problems, anything from a clogged radiator to blown head gasket. See the troubleshooting section of the site FAQ.

I was referring to a thermostat housing gasket. That's what I was told when I got an oil change a few weeks ago. Please understand I have very limited automotive knowledge!

As I said probably not a bad idea to replace the thermostat, along with the gasket, but also see the FAQ for more troubleshooting information since there may be other issues. If you're going to have someone do the work for you be sure to go to a good independent mechanic, not a dealer, not a chain shop, and not a quick lube joint.
