Why does pennzoil full synthetic advertise that it only lasts 5,000 miles, while other oils claim to last 10,000, and scotty too says that they last 10,000? Should I be thinking about this cynically? Do they not care if they look bad? Is the oil just bad? I don't understand. Thank you for your time.

Maybe they're being sensible about oil changes, or they're trying to sell more? Depends on how you look at it, I suppose. I don't see why anybody would push oil changes to 10,000 mile intervals. That's just asking for unnecessary engine wear, in my opinion. Oil changes take 20 minutes and it's easily the most important fluid in the motor. I only use Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic in my newer vehicles and I religiously change it every 5,000 miles. Scotty sums it up well, oil is cheap, engines are expensive.

1 year/5k miles is the recommended interval regardless of oil type. Beyond that, the oil begins to get dirty and breakdown, lowering its ability to lubricate the engine.
