What does your car overheating have to do with your transmission?
You took the words right out of my mouth, @Doc. That really made no sense, hopefully the OP won't do anything like this again.
Uhhhh, make, model, milage, year?...
oh ya forgot that lol it's a 2008 dodge avenger
oh ya forgot that lol it's a 2008 dodge avenger
And what be the miles you decided to do this change?
195k
it's a goner isn't it?
If you are doing the job yourself, all you need to do is this: take all that old fluid and the old filter as is provided you didn't just trash it all and gotten it all even more dirty and shove it all back in through the fill port with the tiniest bit extra since you know you will lose some. New gasket for the trans pan and you should be good to go. Doesn't hurt to try right? If the fluid happens to not have any sludge whatsoever the you can actually use new stuff and will be ight to use a new filter.
man u scared me for a sec there bc i mixed the fluid with some oil huge sigh of relief lol should i clean the filter too
Preferably the old stuff didn't smell either, indicates deterioration. Not too sure what you mean my some oil mixed in... You can clean the filter, that's fine but that oil mixing in is a bit iffy for me. How much oil is mixed with the trans fluid?
there was some oil already in the drain pan when i drained the trans so now it's mixed think there was quite a bit
The problem is that engine oil doesn't have as much frictionless lubrication I guess you can call it compared to trans oil so any mixing of the two especially if dirty is not a good idea. When the fluid was coming out did it smell at all? Or did you find any debris from the trans fluid?

Do not go putting in the engine oil, trans fluid mixture back into the trans. That will screw you up more than using new stuff. If there was no debris or sludge from trans and it didn't smell then using new stuff would be your best gamble. Good luck.
ya i was gonna put that in there lol thanks really appreciate it
just now getting ready to put the filter back on and fluid in but is it bad to mix old and new fluid i read that it is and what brand should i use
Mixing new fluid in with the old is OK. That's what happens when you do a drain and fill, which is the recommended procedure for trans fluid change. Any good brand (Valvoline, Castrol, etc.) of the manufacturer-specified fluid type is fine. If the old fluid wasn't burnt and gritty, indicating worn friction material, you've got a good shot at this going OK.
Thanks for the assist Chuck, the reason I did not recommend mixing Jordan's old trans fluid with new is cause he said he drained it into a oil drain pan with some oil in there already, so there is potentially an good amount of oil in the trans fluid. Unless oil trans fluid mix is okay, though I have been warned against it before.
My gf also thought I had got it fixed already and she tried starting it last night I stopped her right away but not quick enough she started it up for a like literally a sec completely forgot to tell her and now I'm wishing I didn't probably wouldn't of happened if I didn't take it off the lower it to the ground and take the jack stands out from underneath it just figured since I wasn't gonna get to it right away I should probably put it down so it's not a danger to anyone
Did that just ruin my chances of saving it?
Maybe it did, maybe it didn't. I would argue it doesn't hurt to try.
Just watched a few of Scotty's vids and he said to use Lucas stop slip for tranny's that r slipping should I put some of that in to better my chances of saving it
And is there anything else u can think of that would possibly better my chances
Nvm I just went ahead and put it on
I would hold off on the Lucas until such time as you verify whether it's needed. It's really just a bandaid to get a little more life out of a dying transmission, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. If your transmission is not slipping I would not use it.
Got the filter and pan back on and and fluid in and it's runs and drives smooth thanks for the help guys very thankful for what u guys do
