[Solved] Porsche denies me warranty coverage!!!

Hi Scotty,

I am the original owner of a 2015 Porsche Macan-S SUV with only 43K miles on it with an under body rusting issue and I do not live near the ocean. I brought it to Porsche/Audi in Melbourne Florida 2 weeks ago because the frame has multiple areas of rust on it and the exhaust system does too. It has never been on the beach or off roading. Although the vehicle has a 12-year unlimited mileage warranty on corrosion the dealer said it is not covered in this case because the rust is from the outside in. Only inside to out corrosion is covered even though this is on the frame. I called Porsche corporate USA and spoke to a woman who said she was going to look into it. I haven’t heard back from her and she hasn’t returned my subsequent phone call. Unfortunately, I bought it before I began following you so I could not heed your warnings about Porsche’s. By the way I also have a 22 year old 2002 Lexus ES300 (like yours) of which I am the original owner. It has 107K miles on it and not a bit of frame rust and it still has the original exhaust system. Needless to say no more German cars for me. I’ll be sticking with Toyota/Lexus. I do the oil changes on both vehicles myself. For kicks I asked Porsche of Melbourne Florida how much they wanted for an oil change; the answer was $500!!

Thanks,

Frank DelliSanti

90% of SUVs are unibodies now. There is no frame. The body itself is the frame. It saves lots of weight, with the trade-off that you can really only crash the car once. There are crumple zones designed into the car and once they've been triggered, they won't collapse predictably ever again. With a body-on-frame vehicle, you can tear apart the car, replace what was bent, and put it all back together again. Traditional SUVs are body-on-frame vehicles that are shared with trucks, they just put different bodywork on them. As far as I'm aware, Porsche doesn't make a body-on-frame vehicle (where the frame and body are distinct) of any kind.

the exhaust system does too.

Exhaust systems are usually considered wear and tear items, look at your warranty's fine print. If you were in Ohio, like me, exhaust systems are wear and tear. Somehow, my 1999 Ranger more or less still has most of the original exhaust after 25 years and almost 300k miles.

Great explanation, thank you!
