I have a 2013 Chevy Captiva sport. The original key fob is wearing out, i bought two new fobs on Amazon and I cant program them myself. either the dealer or locksmith can program them. They're charging me around $150 to program a Fob. How else or can I buy the programmer myself and program it at home? please help!
@dapperj
there is no way. you have to do to the dealership and do it correctly. any modification to the computer could end up with failure and more issues. if you find another way, iam not able to reccomend it. why not just swap the whole key assembly part in your steering wheel. so much easier, as far as i know, you need an expensive obd 2 scanner to program stuff. sorry if iam unable to help you. but i can advice to always have an extra key, because if you loose the only one you have, you will have to pay $$$ alot
I was able to program the transmitter on my Tahoe myself with the dash buttons. On the Captiva I cant, doesn't have the option to program the transmitter. I live close to Chicago, its's starting to get cold out here and my wife controller is starting to go out. Thanks for the advice!
I was going to cut the black plastic from my Ford key so I could carry it is my wallet. Made sense to me at the time. I did not know it had some kind of chip in it and I destroyed the key. My local hardware store sold me a key, used the good key my wife uses to reprogram the new key and it was just the cost of the key purchase. I almost gave the key-guy a hug since the Ford place wanted over a hundred dollars. I have since become a regular customer of that hardware store and shop there before going to other places.
Find a locksmith that can work on chip keys and ask them to make a copy of your original key. They can program the chip on a new key that you can open the doors manually (not the remote) and start the car. I did the same for my car and I think it cost around $70.
Good luck.
