Hi. Does anyone have any experience purchasing a car in another state in terms of taxes? I'm concerned about double fees and taxes, even though the quote in the other state shows fees and taxes for my location. Any advice is appreciated.
where are you buying from? Where will you be tagging
You don't say what state you're in.
For the most accurate answer, I would call your DMV/insurance provider.

Several years ago I bought a new car at a dealership in Okla. City. When I brought it back down to Texas to register it, that is when I paid the sales tax on it. I had to pay Texas sales tax in order to register it. It was a cash sale with no trade so it was pretty simple. That's my experience in Texas.
Not sure about purchasing from other states but moving titles from one state to another can be costly. First the registration change from seller to buyer in old state. Then new registration in new state. Then sales tax where purchased and in new state. Taxes may be prorated so not a full year in each state but some taxes for both states. Unless it is one Hell-of-a-car I'd tell them to put title in my state and I'd buy the car. Otherwise I'd move on.
This subject comes up quite frequently on Craigs List Autoforum and the answer really vary to say the least. Some say the state you bought it at charges you the state tax as its in their state. Then your suppose to be credited in your home state. Now another deal is that you buy the car in that other state BUT you get it towed from that state to the boundries of your home state then yu don't pay taxes in the purchased state. I dunno...I think its prudent to check the state your buying from and ask from their the difference between driving it out from their OR purchasing and towing out..maybe its the same in some states...they want their pound of flesh..
When I purchased my new Tacoma this year I became a resident of Grants Pass, Oregon which has a new for 2020 “sales tax” on motor vehicles of .05%. I used live Seattle, Washington which has a 13% sales tax on everything, but food.
I searched the internet and found the idea spec Tacoma at a dealership In Olympia, Washington.
If I purchased the truck in Olympia I would have paid 13% sales tax on the truck. Instead I printed out the online listing for the truck from the dealer in Olympia and presented it to dealership in Grants Pass and they did a dealer trade with the dealership in Olympia. That way I only paid Oregon sales tax.
There are a lot factors to save money on cars. Look up “Earl Stewart on cars” on YouTube to learn about most dealership tricks to con you out you’re money
depends on the state, i have purchased new cars from adjacent states and only paid one sales tax, my state of residence
Sales tax is usually paid by the seller on purchases. If you buy at Walmart they will collect the tax but then they pay that tax, not you, to the government. Where the buyer will pay their tax is when they buy a tag. If you do not tag in state of purchase that state will not tax you. When you buy a tag in your state then you will pay state taxes on value assigned to the tag.
In Florida car sales have three extra charges of Tax-Title-Tag. Pay that and use "your car" until government wants their next rental payment.
The car would be purchased from a dealer in South Carolina and I reside in North Carolina. The dealer has offered to deliver the car for free if that helps.
i think that you are ok, i purchased a couple new cars in NC and registered them in SC, i think the dealer said that SC/NC had a reciprocal agreement concerning sales tax, the dealer will know for sure
