Can you detect slip in the transmission while it's in the vehicle

Are mechanics able to see if the transmission is slipping without taking anything apart? As well as a exhaust leak, will taking some things apart have to be done or do you just need to drive the car and/or use a jack to look at things?

Please use more descriptive titles instead of just the word "Question". Thanks.

Yes. Modern transmissions have input and output speed sensors, meaning you can measure the exact slip speed using OBD tools.

I have the obd tool but still cant figure out how to use it. I tried youtube and cant seem to work it. I hope my mechanic is around tomorrow

You need a higher level scanner.

@yaser
I can see slip speed using a $2 OBD dongle from eBay, and free smartphone app. I'm sure any basic scanner like Bluedriver can do it too.

Ill just ask my mechanic whenever he returns haha

Yes we can figure out if you have slipping based on OBD-II Live Data from our scan tools during a drive test. Exhaust leaks can also be tracked down without disassembling anything.

Ok thanks guys. Appreciate it. Gonna try to figure all this out this week. Probably gonna buy another car in a few months so im just hoping this. One last until then

You can usually tell if a transmission is slipping based on whether it seems to be accelerating the car adequately for the gear ratio it's in and and RPM. If you're pushing say 3500-4000 RPM in 2nd gear and the car is struggling to accelerate, generally that's a slipping tranny. Low gear and higher RPMs should get you moving quickly, because that puts more torque to the wheels.
