In terms of reliability, which is better : 1st gen or 2nd gen raptor?

if you care about longevity, then the only one even worth considering to get are the 2010-2014 Raptor with the true and tried 6.2L NA V8 and 6-speed AT (so first Gen Raptor).  Forget about the second Gen Raptor:  the Ecoboost engine will wear out sooner and the 10-speed AT has been through growing pains and jury still out on that transmission’s long term reliability.  Also, Ford quality has been going downhill over the years.

The problem is that most 1st gen ones available have alot of miles on'em, and their owners probably beat the heck outta them, and they're pretty expensive too, they hold their value so well

The only chance you have with actual reliability is any Raptor with the 6.2 V8.

Any known problems apart from the engine?

@petrolhead1996 overall not really. Water pump failure was a problem with some of the early models but I’ve seen a 6.2 truck have 400k mi no problem on it.

I'd also add that if you aren't looking to do hardcore offroading a Raptor probably doesn't make sense either way. It would be much cheaper & you could get a more reliable vehicle that's less likely to have been abused if you get an ordinary F150 with a 5.0L V8 -- it's easy to do cheap aftermarket modifications to make it closer to a Raptor aesthetically, and of course you can also replace the shocks, tires, etc to make it more capable offroad. Not sure what your plans for the truck would be but very few people even Raptor owners need the level of offroad capability that comes with them.

True, good point
I think a Land Cruiser would be even a better choice 😅

I’ve never seen a 1st gen Raptor that didn’t have a good chuck of miles on it. I would get a more recent one that’s lower mileage, cause there’s not a big reliability difference between the two. Gen 2 looks a lot better anyways. I wouldn’t worry too much about the EcoBoost either, it has direct and port injection so it shouldn’t require additional maintenance vs the V8 in the gen 1.

I agree about the looks, but what i am worried about is the engine and especially the transmission

There's a bit more risk there sure. I wouldn't be worried too much about the engine though unless you're wanting to go past 300K miles or something. Which really isn't what a Raptor is meant for regardless. Personally I would be much more worried about a previous owner abusing it than the mechanical differences between them. But that's coming from an assumption that if you're considering buying one of these you have plenty of cash to burn anyways -- if you have to stretch for it, it's not a smart purchase, and if you really want to offroad you should do it in something more affordable. On the plus side if you can comfortably afford it, the newer ones hold their value relatively well. First gen not as much though from what I have seen.

If it were me, I'd get one, drive it for awhile, and sell the thing before it even hits 150K miles.

Good point
Thanks man
