Registering 2004 Toyota Prius Transmission after Transmission Fluid Exchange?

So I was at the Toyota dealer yesterday, and was curious how much they wanted to do a transmission fluid exchange for a 2004 Toyota Prius.

They said it needed to come in to them because the transmission needed to be registered. And wanted to charge $250-$300 to do it.

Do Prius’s or Toyota transmissions need to be registered in the ECU after a fluid exchange? Or is that just more dealer nonsense?

TMK, Toyota’s (except the BMW Supra) don’t need much in terms of registering and resetting ECU stuff. Maybe just the battery, but not the transmission?

I don't understand.

Did you ask them what a "registration" is?

They basically said resetting the ECU. And left it at that.

I know the term registration like battery registration for AGM batteries. Basically resetting the ECU so it knows how to optimally charge the battery.

But for a Toyota transmissions it didn’t seem to make sense to me. None of the Prius how-to mentioned resetting/registering the transmission alongside fluid exchange.

But I dunno, maybe there is some obscure reset/registration? Or something that can be done, but doesn’t really affect performance? Or maybe complete nonsense?

maybe they just mean resetting an instrument panel service reminder?

Haha. Maybe!

This makes no sense. Seems like a scam.

I concur.

Why "register" an 18 year old transmission?  Sounds like more dealer BS to me, and for $250.

It covered registration and transmission oil change. I think the registration part was a scare tactic. And the pricing to be outrageous for transmission oil.
