Been ripped off from a from a formerly high-trust local mechanic.
I just assumed his promises mean't something solid - and I'm elderly and disabled.
Is there a US federal or state regulation requiring mechanical/electrical work-done documentation and evidence of parts replaced?
What should a good, reputable shop do for customer procedure and paperwork?
Is there a recognized standard?
The laws vary from state to state.
I live in FL. Here's what must be included on the invoice in my state:
The invoice must include:
- Date and odometer reading.
- Description of work.
- Labor, parts and other merchandise costs.
- Nature of parts (new, used, rebuilt, etc.).
- Guarantee, if any.
- Registration number from the certificate issued by FDACS identifying the shop.
Here's a link to the law here.

Get in touch with your local or state agency that licenses and regulates automotive repair businesses. They will be able to help you.

it depends on what you agree to, how big a shop is, how well you know them etc. Sometimes I get work done off the record, for a special rate. But I understand that I'm on the hook and accept responsibility if anything happens.

What did he promise you?
