Resetting car computer

I have a 2020 Toyota Corolla hatchback. I’m afraid if I reset my car computer by removing the battery for 15 minutes I have to tow my car to the dealer to reprogram my car. Will this method work?

Back up. Start at the beginning please. What are you trying to do? Is there a problem with the car?

A few weeks ago I used a volt jumper pack to start my car.

But why? Please, you need to give details. They matter.

I’m thinking maybe my car computer is causing my car to be weird

How is it being "weird". Be specific please.

I also noticed I’m burning more fuel.

OK,not much info to go on here, but I'm going to guess that your battery died (left light on overnight or something).

Well, that could have reset your computer, and now it's trying to re-calibrate all the sensors and actuators and that's why you're getting poor economy.

So maybe I need to reset my computer?

No! That will send you right back to where you started.

If there are no warning lights on your instrument panel, then just keeping driving your car.

My battery didn’t die. I tested it out at Pepboys and they said my battery was really good. It’s weird because I had to use a jumper to start my car.

I don’t know why I had to use my jumper to start my car. It just didn’t start. And I know it wasn’t the battery or starter. This was 2 weeks ago. 2 days I filled my gas and I’m getting poor fuel economy.

All you have to do to reset the ECU is disconnect the battery and then turn on electronics. Step on the brakes, turn on lights such as headlights, navigation/dome lights.. instead of using the 'resistor method'. This works by clearing out any residual power left in the electrical system. However, when one resets the ECU this way they often find their car running poorly at idle (needs idle relearn), the radio and many other presets (personal settings) will be gone. It's far better to use a memory saver, which is made specifically to address this issue.

this is totally bonkers. Either you want to reset the computer, or save it. You can't do both.

@mmj fair point, you obviously cannot do both

Here's Scotty demonstrating how to use a memory saver - this is the one he recommends under Tools at the upper right of the forum page - VSTM OBD II Vehicle ECU Emergency Power Supply Cable Memory Saver (Amazon stocks it)

Did you step on the gas harshly a few times? Spend extended time idling? Extended idling consumes more fuel than most people realize.

While I was working 28 miles away, I drove on the Interstate. My father-in-law has a lead foot and accelerates briskly. I need to put gas in it sooner because of it. If your CEL isn't on, odds are it's the way you've been driving, lately.

You keep posting multiples of the same thing and I have to clean it up. If you're mashing the submit button then please stop. Thanks.

A battery can be dead (no charge) but still be in "good" condition. These are unrelated concepts.

Never go to Pep boys, by the way.

I don’t know why I had to use my jumper to start my car. It just didn’t start. And I know it wasn’t the battery or starter.

How do you "know"?

If the car started with a jump pack, then that means the battery was depleted.

I’m getting poor fuel economy.

How many MPG?
