Hello Scotty,
I need your advice for whether I should replace the brake rotors.
I have a rust issue on my front brake rotors. They look fine to me from the outside, however the ventilation gap inside looks quite rusty. I could not decide if I should replace them. I want to use them until the brake pads are also worn and replace all of them together, but I don't want to put us on danger either.
- They are worn around 2mm. Their thickness is 34mm, and the brand new ones are 36mm.
- There is no issue with the braking performance, no steering wheel shaking issue during deceleration.
- The rust is only in the ventilation gap, but it is quite extensive. I can somehow chip the rusted iron off with my hand where it bridges the two surfaces together, but not completely either.
My car is BMW 525d xDrive 2015 (F10) automatic and has 102.000 miles.
It has BOSCH 0 986 479 E19 front, ventilated, two-piece 348mmx36mm disks.
I live in Munich and I wish you a happy new year from Germany.
Best regards

that looks like every brake rotor I've seen around here
Well that's an awful lot of rust. I would advise replacing them now. I assume you probably live up north where they put salt on the road in the winter. My son has the same problem in Rhode Island. I never had to change mine in Texas
@scottykilmer Thank you so much for the advice. It is very kind of you. I will change them as soon as possible.
You'll be fine using up the remainder of the pads before you replace anything. As @imperator noted earlier, there are many rotors out there that look similar to yours, some even worse, and they are all completely safe and functional.should replace them. I want to use them until the brake pads are also worn and replace all of them together, but I don't want to put us on danger either.
