Hi Scotty/Esteemed Moderators,
I recently purchased a used 2017 Toyota 86 Base model with an automatic transmission and the standard 2.0 4-cyl. boxer engine through a popular used vehicle "delivery" service with a name similar to "Nirvana." The car was apparently a lease and had 14,250 miles on it and a few dings/chips, but otherwise runs just fine. I took it to two local mechanics who tested it for codes and performed basic "used car" inspections--both said it was all good. Based on info I've gathered from Scotty's YouTube channel, I'm concerned that the 86's automatic transmission and its Subaru "DNA" underneath will mean it will never last as long nor be as reliable as the 2012 Toyota Camry LE it's replacing. Bottom line: I'm wondering if, because it's technically a Toyota, I should expect Toyota quality from this lightly used 86, similar to what I had with my old Camry (156,000 miles without problems before another driver totaled it). Did I buy a bad car? Your content is extremely informative and your mission to prevent rip-offs and empower consumers is very refreshing in today's "rip-off" society. Thanks!
The Toyota 86 is not a "Toyota" car. Toyota and Subaru both work together because Toyota owns 20% of Subaru. Yes it does have the Subaru boxer engine and Toyota transmission. It depends on how you are going to drive it and take care of it. The mechanic said it was ok and if you plan on using it as a weekend car and not driving like a maniac, then you might have a good car.
