Sell, junk, or repair

Hi Scotty,

I've got a 2000 Honda Civic EX coupe, manual transmission, with 95k miles on it. My mechanic told me it would need a new clutch about 10 years ago but I drive maybe 1000 miles annually so the clutch is still functional but skips occasionally in 5th gear.

I got a used Nissan Xterra for my birthday this year so I no longer need the Civic. Because the Civic needs a clutch and probably several other age-related parts, I can't decide whether to sell it as is, junk it, or maybe learn to do some work on it myself. I think it has many years of life left in it and would prefer not to see it scrapped. What would you advise?

Use the Xterra as your primary car and replace the clutch by yourself in the Civic it still has a ton of life left in it I would not junk it or sell it, rather, I would use it as a secondary car. Scotty has videos on how to change a clutch by yourself. You are not using it that much either so if you do want to sell it then I would replace the clutch then sell it.

Scotty's How to Replace a Clutch video

Some people don't trust him in mechanical DIY videos but if you want to check it out click for Chris Fix's How to Replace a Clutch video.

Hope this helps!

it sounds like you're not going to drive it. Sell it someone who needs it.

I’m not a mechanic by any means. But I decided to try my hand at maintaining my 20 year old Honda Accord MT.

Keeping it as a project car might be fun, assuming you have the space. And they don’t make MT’s en masse anymore, so any MT you can get your hands on, I’d try to keep.
