I bought brand new struts and shocks for my '99 Chevy Lumina w/215k miles. I hired a mech whom I have employed since 2017 to perform the installation. The initial ride was not impressive. After about 2 or 3 weeks, the ride was worse than before and undriveable. The ride is horrible. I have been suspicious of the installation and/or product because the ride is bad on all four wheels. After watching a couple of your strut videos, I now realize Monroes aren't a top shelf brand; I still didn't get 50 miles out of 'em. I am wondering if there is some other problem which may contribute to my shocks and struts underperformance?
If it was really worse than before they're just cheap shocks and struts I see all the time which is why I never buy Monroe
Which brands are good for GM cars besides AC Delco?
Yes. Worn suspension parts can contribute to a harsh ride. Bushings and ball joints etc. Worn out stabilizer bar links will make the car roll around too. This is all stuff the mechanic should know.
KYB, Rancho are good shocks
Thanks. I asked that mech about other components which could cause this problem, but he put the blame on the struts by saying they must be "old struts". I wasn't satisfied with his answer. I need to find a different mechanic. Though Monroes aren't that good, that's all I've ever installed on that vehicle. I bought those struts. He installed 'em. Now he bought a set for my Buick and I'm not having any trouble. Hmm. I'm thinkin' he sabotaged the install. I only buy OEM unless I let him buy the part.
I didn't have any issues with Monroe, but that was a long time ago. The ones on your car could be duds though. You never know, it happens. In that case you could exchange them under warranty.
It can't hurt to get a second opinion from another mechanic.
