Should I buy a Mini?

Would you buy a 2005, Mini Cooper, convertible with 35,000 miles for $4,500.  It’s a private, cash only deal.

It’s a manual transmission and has a salvage title which the owner claims had minor front end damage.  I’m very strapped for cash and really need a car.  It could all be a big lie but if everything checks out, the price and millage maybe worth it.  What do you think?

Mini’s of that era used a Chrysler co-developed engine. (Unless it was a diesel).

I don’t think too many people here a fans of Chrysler small displacement engines.

Minis are not particularly reliable or inexpensive to repair. The top on a convertible is an expensive wear item especially if you're not able to garage it. The mileage (35K miles on an 18-year-old car!) is very suspicious and would need to be confirmed. To top it all off, unless you know for absolute certain why that thing has a salvage title, as well as what the consequences might be in your state for registration and insurance, that's an automatic "RUN AWAY!"

You'd be much better off finding an old Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic with a manual transmission.
