Hi scotty, I drive a 2015 mitsubishi lancer es CVT, with 88,000 miles. I bought the car with just under 40k and have had it for about 3 years, runs fine for the most part. Owners manual recommends changing transmission fluid every 30,000 miles. I had a shop change the fluid at 60k and recently started changing my own oil and brakes to save money. Was planning on changing my cvt fluid when I hit 90k however my brother in-law (who is a part-time mechanic) told me that the cvt will probably end up failing around 100k-130k anyway and that changing the fluid will do more harm than good because it wears down the seals inside the transmission. Is this true and should I just leave it alone? I checked the fluid a few months ago it was kind of gross looking but didn't look too black or smell burnt. Thanks for all your help, been a fan of your channel for ages!
I’d stick to your owners manual in this case (only cause you’ve changed it twice before on schedule).
If you’d never changed it before, I’d say leave it alone.
Just be sure to use the correct CVT fluid for your car.
I wouldn’t give up on CVT maintenance just because they have potential to be problematic. I have a CVT too, in a Nissan, and I’m at 146k miles. I change my own fluid too, and drive conservatively, not like a race car
Ask him why changing fluid would wear out a seal. That doesn't make sense to me.
Ya that whole cvt fluid changing wearing out seals. Clean fluid extends the life of seals. It’s the debris in dirty fluid that wears out seals. I recommend keep on changing when due if you want the best life out of it
