Hey Scotty, I have a 2002 Ford Crown Victoria CNG, with 215,671 miles on it. Engine, Transmission, and Differential are all original. With fuel prices the way they are, this car has been a godsend for me and my family. With monthly gas costs for this car below $50, Maintenance costs as high as $2,000/yr would still be more economical than a gasoline car. The left wheel bearing is making a vibration on the highway, and my mechanic tells me it needs to be fixed eventually. With a differential that is 20 years old, would it be better to just completely rebuild the differential? My mechanic is very honest and told me that replacing just the left axle shaft would cost $900, and a complete rebuild would cost $1,200 w/ parts+labor. In the past, they have been pricey, but they have always done amazing work and if they ever messed anything up, they always fixed it on their time and dime. They’re the only LA area mechanics that I have really been able to trust. What should I do?
Why is he quoting a price on a new axle shaft if he doesn't know if it needs one?
If the bearing is starting to act up, why not just jump on the bearing replacement now before it chews up the axle shaft?
The axle shaft has already been damaged, so either way, both the bearing and shaft gotta go.
ok. He might be right. I just can't see how he determined that without pulling the axle out
.
If you just want to know if you should pay $900 for an axle/bearing/seal or $300 more for a complete rebuild, you gotta go with the rebuild. Get a written warranty
Your mechanic is NOT very honest. Replacing the rear axle bearings and a couple of seals is a peanut job. Find a better mechanic and tell him what YOU want done, not him.
Ah I see. I’ll look around for someone else then. Do you perhaps know of any good mechanics in the LA area?
Change the bearing. This car isn't worth dumping money into.

Sorry, no. I escaped from California 18 years ago.
