Should I get my tires/wheels balanced?

Hi Scotty,

I have an issue with my tires/wheels on my 2022 Ford Edge with 31,000 miles. The wheel shakes back and forth violently at 45 mph. There are no codes. I took it to a local Good Year and they said that they test drove it and couldn’t replicate the issue. However I instantly created the issue. It’s in this video: https://youtu.be/E6Bir-8Af3A

Thanks in advance.

There are no codes.

There are of course no "codes" for wheel balance or worn suspension parts.

Why would you take your car to a joint like that? Chain shops are almost always the pits. You should find a good independent mechanic to work on your car.

Wheel balance is a good place to start. Also check for bent wheels, loose bearings, and any loose suspension parts.

@chucktobias was the vibration did the video demonstrate an issue?

It's hard to tell what's going on from the video. If you're feeling it in the steering wheel you need to concentrate on the front wheels, suspension, and bearings.

@chucktobias it was making a vibration from side to side, symptoms of a wheel out of balance. But I’ve already had the wheels balance by two different tire shops within the past 1500 miles so I’m kind of not sure where to go or what to do. Should I start by analyzing live data with a scan tool?

Check you wheel weights. If one or more flew off, there will be really sticky residue where it came off.

Should my steering wheel shake when going down the road, even a little bit?

No.

What else should I do?

You need to find a better mechanic.

Huh? Why on earth would there would be anything in live data having to do with a shaking front end?

The only possibility other than a bad tire, bent wheel, or something worn or bent in the suspension that comes to mind might be some issue with the electric power steering shaking the steering wheel. A generic scan tool isn't going to be able to diagnose that.

You might want to rotate tires front to back to see if the problem travels with the tires/wheels.

@chucktobias ok. I am going to the mechanic on Monday, will let you know what happens

So I went to a mechanic today and he rebalanced the front tires. My steering wheel still shakes when going down the road, but the mechanic (doesn't seem trustworthy- I learned my lesson) but the mechanic insists there's nothing wrong and its just that it's what happens as brakes and tires wear normally. Should my steering wheel shake when going down the road, even a little bit? What else should I do? Help!

Here's an update for everyone. Car now has 36,010 miles. Now the steering wheel shakes whenever you brake, in addition to when normally going down the road (only time it doesn't is when it accelerates). I am going to attach a picture of my brakes: maybe someone can tell me if my rotor is warped?

Additionally, I am suspicious that the tires could be a culprit, too. A picture is attached, all in this link:

Huh? You don't seriously expect anyone to be able to tell that from a picture, do you? All it takes is for the rotors to be warped by a few thousands of an inch to cause problems. You need to check the runout on your rotors with a dial indicator.

did you rotate them as Chuck suggested?

Also check your bearings.
