Hi Scotty k. I just purchased a used Subaru BRZ limited manual transmission with 94,000 miles and everything seems to be great with how it drives no check engine lights but I do have one issue. The engine seems to be making a lot of ticking noises not a knocking sound but a literally a ticking sound. I did take it to the dealership since I have an extended warranty but they claim every single time I go in that the sound is normal for this type of vehicle.
what do you think?
The FA20 in the BRZ is usually a pretty solid motor. Not super fast or powerful and it has the infamous "torque dip" but pretty simple and reliable for a sports car engine. Unmodified engines generally do pretty well over 100K. (And the manual is a great transmission, too [though you might be about due for a clutch].)
That said, things can go wrong. With that many miles, a ticking noise may be normal aging but you are right to be concerned. If it were me and I felt like the dealer was downplaying it, I'd probably get a second opinion from an independent Subaru/Asian shop. Or you could record the sound and post it on a BRZ/FR-S/86 forum and see what people say.
Welcome to the forum!
Dealers are notoriously deaf when it comes to hearing problems because they don't make any money on warranty work. The ticking sound could be a bomb ready to go off. Get it diagnosed by an independent mechanic like @dad21m2 said.
Thanks both of you! I’ll definitely take that up and have a independent dealer or mechanic look at it.
