- Scotty, I just bought a new 2021 Ford Ranger and my owner's manual says to use 5W30 synthetic blend. I have just over 2000 miles on my truck and I am starting to think about my first oil change, and I've always heard you say follow the specs on what type of engine oil your car uses. I have used Castrol for years, but my question is I noticed they have a full synthetic oil that is specifically designed for GDI high pressure engines. I think you mentioned to look for a label that says something like gf6? I know it's not good to switch between synthetic and conventional but this is my first oil change! Help what do I do?
Yes it is fine. Full synthetic is a better quality oil than synthetic blend anyway so you are buying better oil than required. If you go to the dealer for service, they will try to sell you full synthetic as well.
All GF6 oils are full synthetic.
You can use the GF6-A oil in the correct grade, 5W-30. The GF-6B oil is for vehicles that call for 0W oil only.
Ok that being said its ok to start with and use the full synthetic gf6 oil for the life of my truck even though the manufacturer says use synthetic blend?
Think of synthetic blend as more of a bar and full synthetic is one step higher. You can continue to use blend if you want, but full synthetic is the better oil.
When I have done engine rebuilds I’ll run conventional or blend until the first change then switch to full synthetic. Main reason is to allow the engine to break in. Rings, new bearings etc... some manufacturers as I understand it will ship vehicle from factory same way. Also note the recommendation is for blend. Going better is ok. If you used conventional you could invalidate your warranty possibly.
