When is the correct time to check tire pressure and fill air?

The other day the weather was in the teens and I was in a rush to leave. So after warming up the car for 5 minutes I took off and the when I got to my destination, I saw that the tires looked like they were low on pressure. I parked the vehicle and the next day I filled up the tires with the correct air pressure.

My question is when a situation like this happens, how long does one have to wait to check the tire pressure? How much time does it take for the tires to "Cool-Down" both in Winter and Summer seasons?

The tire pressure should be checked when the tires are cold. Roughly speaking, if the car sits for couple of hours, you should be fine checking the tire pressure, but it all depends on how much and with what speed did you drive the car before.

OK, I clearly hear what you are all saying. When I drove a tractor trailer for less than a year, we were told to check our tires every 300 miles or 6 hours of travel. Yes, I was hauling with a New York State "OVERWEIGHT PERMIT" (Which is practically only limited to NY and nowhere else) with about 106,000 pounds and it was winter on the New York State Thruway in weather close to zero degrees. Each of the 18 tires were supposed to be filled to 110 psi as per order of my supervisors and I wonder if all these miles of driving...did I get an  accurate reading?
