Do tires really need to be rotated? If so, how often?

Rotating is a good thing.

Simply due to the fact that the front wheels steer, and the rear ones don't, there is going to be uneven wear. Add to that the fact that all cars have a tiny bit of toe-in to keep them tracking straight. This means the tires are constantly scrubbing off a little bit. Add to that the fact that most people don't have wheels that are perfectly aligned.

Even tread wear is important for maintaining traction and handling on the road, so it affects your safety. On top of that, rotating will help the tires last a little bit longer, saving you money.

My manual says every 7 to 8,000 mi and it's a really easy job. It shouldn't take more than 30 minutes.

Basically, there is no excuse not to do it.

Look, … just rotate those phlunkin’ tires! Seriously.

Tire rotation is strongly advised to ensure that the tires wear evenly. This will extend tire life and save you money. Yes!

Further, even tire wear is also important for balanced handling. Simple example: failure to rotate tires on a front-wheel-drive vehicle will, for certain, result in the front tires having significantly less tread than the rear tires. And when shirt happens - say, you over estimate your driving skills - this could make the vehicle more difficult to control, especially if the road is wet, or slippery, … or some inattentive bullwinkle decides to park himself in the middle of a country road, at night.

Also, pretty well every single car is asymmetric - unequally corner to corner loaded, unequally level, not precisely aligned, et al, … and all that inflicts an unusual wear patterns on tires that are not rotated. Tread cupping, … just one example.

Tread cupping cause high noise and vibration, … regular tire rotation will virtually eliminate cupping. Just imagine, … lot less bitching about noise and vibration on this forum!

Anyway, … rotate your tires regularly! It’s an opportunity to check your car’s condition underneath, too. Don’t do it at your peril.

F.S.

Glad you did it. The dealership might be too busy at that time.

I did it once on AWD Swift when I noticed front tyres were worn more than rear ones.

I do that on Auris when I switch to winter tyres and vice versa so they wear somehow evenly.

Yes.

I rotate them every 5000 miles, but the important thing is you do rotate them at regular intervals, if you want them all to wear evenly.

Your owner’s manual may have a say about the interval period.

Here in Canada we rotate whenever we change from summer to winter tires or from winter to summer. But if you have summer tires all year long then yea rotate it once in a while.

Do all makes and models need a tire rotation? If so how many miles usually?

The reason I asked is because when I had a hand me down BMW and took it into the stealership for an oil change, I asked for a tire rotation, and they said it didn’t need it, EVER!

I was surprised because I was taught to rotate your tires every so often. Is this something new? Or was BMW BSing me?

I went 3rd party and did the rotation anyway.

I was watching one of Scotty's videos recently and could have sworn he said you don't need to rotate your tires anymore. I meant to go back and re-watch but now I can't remember which video it was. Could be I heard it wrong...

No way!! I gotta find that vid.

I was half asleep. Maybe he was referring to a particular vehicle if he really said it...

I'm almost positive I heard him say it too. Scotty said in one of his videos it isn't necessary to rotate your tires, just a waste of money. I've been looking for that video, and ended up here while searching.

I find this particularly ironic coming from BMW, since many have adjustable ride height. I've seen so many minivans going down the road with noticeable negative camber (basically riding the edge of the tire).

I thought I saw a video of Scotty saying it wasn’t that important.

he also says they dry rot before wearing out (not a problem where I am). Scotty also only drives small cars. Tire rotation is more important on larger heavier vehicles.

Interesting that some of you have that written in manuals. I don't have that in manual for my Auris.

It depends on OEM & country/region.

Yes if you want them to wear evenly. Your manual should tell you how often

I rotate the tires on all of my cars (5 Toyotas) between 7000 & 10000 miles. I only swap them front to back, NOT switching sides. Play it safe, same direction of spin, keeping them on the same side of the car.

Did your BMW have a staggered setup? And were they directional tyres?

Scotty did say you didn’t need to rotate your tyres.

They weren’t staggered.

I am not sure if they were directional. But that is good to note. Thank you.

I know these were damn expensive run flat tires. With a very hard to come by size.

Hello. I’m just wondering tire rotations are needed at all if my vehicle drives without any problems.
