Scotty, I have a 2009 Toyota Sienna, and a 2010 GMC Yukon.
My grandpa always said when you go to the car wash, to open the hood, leave the car running and spray off the engine under the hood. “A clean engine runs cleaner” he would say. But I recall you saying in a video that you should NOT do this.
only thing grandpa said was make sure to leave your engine running while you sprayed everything off under the hood....
my engine bay is dirty and full of salt at the end of the winter in minnesota here.
how do I clean out my engine bay under the hood area without damaging anything ?
Do I justbcover the battery and electrical box??
I’m trying to prevent rust here.
please help!
See below: But with the engine off and cooled down, I would just get a rag and wipe the surfaces/parts clean. I did that recently after an off-road trip.

Thanks for this Day Walker! However, Scotty is talking about cleaning oil leaks. What if your underhood, and engine bay is full of salt?
Thanks !!
You are welcome!
All that glitters, is not gold.
But all that is gold doesn’t always glitter. 😉
Well said, I’ll try using that one when the missus is in the mood for some jewellery..
Haha! That’s great.
Any tips on getting salt off engine area near the engine ?
Rinse out all the salt with a low pressure hose. And try and seal off all the electronics with plastic. Yeah, good luck with that.. while you’re at it, you need to figure out a way to keep salt from entering the engine bay.
Cleaning by hand is the only safe method, and boy it is labor intensive.
I would definitely not recommend going to a car wash and pressure washing your engine bay, no disrespect to your grandpa or anything as it may have been viable back in the day. But with all the electronics under there, you do not want to be adding water to the mix.
