I've got a 2015 Scion FRS with 41k. The manufacturer recommends that you not tow with it. I've got a small wooden sailboat on aluminum trailer, total about 250 lbs. I use a hitch that screws into towing loop holes, two in very back of car. Seems to work fine. I can smell a little clutch when going back and forth on boat ramp. Am I asking for trouble?
Listen to the manufacturer. Get a cheap truck for the tow to avoid all future issues.
I can’t imagine that little bit of towing weight will cause much of a problem. Not gonna be more of a strain on the drive train than … heavy passengers.
Can’t comment on your hitch set up. Very light trailers have a tendency to bounce and weave, and if it’s not stable that will cause more mayhem than the weight itself. If you have a reputable UHaul place close by, I’d have them look at it; they’re used to setting people up to tow with small cars.
good luck!
Honestly don't think it would be a problem but the clutch smell doesn't sound good. Is your car automatic of manual?
I recently installed a tow hitch on my Prius. The hitch is rated for 2000 lbs and bolted to the frame of the car. So far, I have only towed a 10' steel trailer with wood deck. Not sure on its exact weight. It's not light but not super heavy either. Have made about three 50-100 mile round trips to move furniture and some building supplies. Today I have been helping my grandmother move, about 5 miles at most but includes a dirt road then getting on a main highway. No problems other than almost loosing bbq cover on the highway. 😊

You buy an itty bitty car with an itty bitty engine and then you decide to pull a trailer? Um, get a truck like the other guy said.
If I recall, those tow bars are rated for 1000 lbs, but personally I wouldn't do anymore than some light towing of equipment to a track day with my 86.
