Are the early 2000's toyota corolla manuals a good buy for someone who knows how to do basic work on cars for basic matainence? Or should I try to get a early 90s or late 90s corolla? I know only basic things like fluid changes and do not posses a mechanics knowlege.

Yes indeed my friend.

Oil burners due to errors in design

Get a 2003+

To add, a well maintained Toyota will need nothing but fluid changes. Perhaps an alternator and spark plugs. You can do it all, the learning curve isn't steep.

Since you want manual, learn about how a clutch works exactly, so that you can diagnose it while test driving the car. Plenty of people sell their manuals just before it needs a clutch job, and I assume you don't want to dish out 50-100$ for a mechanic to diagnose it for you

get a 2003+ or before 1997 as that year of the Corolla goes through oil like mad
